Cemetery meadow

We took over the management of the plot of land north of the cemetery, just off the A20 Ashford Road, in early 2022.  With the help of a grant from Lenham Parish Council, we quickly began to carry out improvement work to the meadow. We removed the grass using a specialist flail mower and our super volunteers were then kept busy raking up the remaining grass cuttings.   The area was scarified. This work will encourage native plants already in place and newly sown seeds, giving them the best chance to thrive.

The next task was to plant saplings around the edge of the meadow, which was carried out in March 2022. 350 native hedge plant saplings were planted; varieties included Downy Birch, Crab Apple, Hazel, Hawthorn, Wild Cherry, Rowan and Blackthorn. Thank you to The Rotary Club of Kent for their hard work and muscle power, helping us to get the planting completed.

Our vision for this piece of land is to create a wildflower meadow that we can all appreciate.
